Renovation of an old house in Berlin. A loft specifically designed between wood and concrete

In the famous multicultural district of Kreuzberg in the former West Berlin, architect Tanja Meyle has renovated an old house from the early 1900s into a modern loft. The renovation is characterized by creativity and contemporary rigour while respecting the already existing

The main feature of this project is the successful combination of two materials: wood and cement. During the project, the pre-existing wooden structure was completely maintained, proceeding only with the renovation and cleaning of the beams. Similarly, all the old stakes that did not pose a risk of injury to people were preserved. The same applies to the two main brick walls, which were restored through brushing, cleaning and insulation

A cube separating the large living room from the smaller kitchen space is the central structure, which is made up of a concrete body. In the kitchen area you can see traces of the pre-existing brick fireplace which was blackened, revealing the path of the old chimneys and putting emphasis on decorating the entire wall. Along the corridor, three "blue boxes" have been designed with different sizes and heights, so that they never reach the ceiling. As a result, the width of the outer shell can be perceived and the space is ventilated, while the slope of the roof can always be seen along the entire length of the water table

In the concept, the staggered units had to appear as hermetically sealed elements. The door should barely stand out from the wall and at the same time they should have different and contrasting colours. This means that each door had to have the same colour as the wall in which it was to be installed. The feasibility of the project was made possible by the use of an Eclisse retractable door, a concept that would not have been possible with conventional swing doors

Eclisse sliding doors with no jamb solved a problem of space in the guest quarters, laundry and cloakroom. In fact, the sliding doors disappear into the wall once opened, simply disappearing with one movement allowing the design concept to be perfectly implemented
